GEARS for BEARS
GEARS (Graduate Exit and Repayment Strategies) is a comprehensive, student-centered program designed to equip graduating students with the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to successfully navigate student loan repayment.
Through GEARS, Maryland Center for Collegiate Financial Wellness transforms the traditional exit counseling experience into a proactive, personalized journey. Rather than simply reviewing repayment basics, the program engages students early—guiding them step-by-step through understanding their loan obligations, exploring repayment options, and selecting a strategy tailored to their unique situation before their first payment becomes due.
GEARS takes a holistic approach to repayment planning by helping students evaluate:
Their full loan portfolio (federal and private)
Household and financial circumstances
Career trajectory and income expectations
Long-term financial goals
Eligibility for forgiveness, deferment, and other benefits
By combining education with individualized strategy development, GEARS empowers students to make informed decisions, reduce the risk of delinquency or default, and build a strong foundation for long-term financial wellness.
